What Being an Entrepreneur Has Taught Me About Celebrating Success
Talking about our achievements doesn’t come easily to most of us. For me, it’s a long-standing habit from childhood—being told not to boast. But when you run your own business, staying quiet about what you’ve achieved can hold you back. Sharing your wins isn’t bragging; it’s showing the difference you make and helping attract the right clients, investors, or partners.
Facing My Weak Spot
I’ve always struggled with talking about my entrepreneurial achievements. Back in 2023, I was encouraged to enter the Great British Entrepreneur Awards. The idea of writing a submission made me squirm. I had to answer very specific questions about myself, my business, and the impact I’d made for clients.
It wasn’t easy, but it forced me to collect the facts. Over the last few years, I’ve supported over 100 startups through the Funding Accelerator programme and helped raise more than £11 million, £5 million of which came in a single 12-month period despite a challenging investment market. Seeing it all in black and white made me pause. I felt proud—but also scared. Imposter syndrome is relentless, even in the face of evidence.
Entering the Great British Entrepreneur Awards
Why am I sharing this? Not for self-promotion. I want to show that even when your instinct is to hide your achievements, it’s worth taking the leap.
Submitting my application was a challenge in itself. The result? I was selected as a finalist in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2023. Attending the awards dinner was a moment to recognise hard work—not just mine, but that of all the finalists. Standing in a room of hundreds of people, listening to the host acknowledge our journeys, I felt the real value of celebrating achievement.
I didn’t win my category—and I didn’t need to. The real win was in entering, reflecting on my journey, and learning from the process.

Lessons for Other Entrepreneurs
Do you ever hold yourself back because you worry about what people think, or whether you’ve done enough? You’re not alone. If we never try, we’ll never know what’s possible.
When it comes to raising investment, support is crucial. That’s why the Funding Accelerator programme connects founders with experienced mentors and a community of funded founders who can guide you through the process.
The first step is acknowledging what holds you back. Whether it’s confidence, financial forecasting, startup valuation, or finding investors, taking the first step to identify your challenge can move you forward.
Looking Ahead
Imagine standing on stage at the British Entrepreneur Awards next year. It could be your turn to be celebrated for the difference you make. And the icing on the cake? One of our Funding Accelerator graduates, Joanne Redmile of TurboGaming, entered in 2023 and won South West Tech Entrepreneur of the Year. Her win proves that the journey is possible—and that success often comes from taking the first step.
If you’re a founder looking to raise equity investment or build your confidence, start by acknowledging what holds you back. Join our Funding Accelerator community, connect with mentors, and take that first step toward your next win. Who knows—you might be the next finalist at the British Entrepreneur Awards.
