Bio

Sophie Davis is a fractional Finance Director/CFO who helps founder-led businesses make better commercial decisions - combining hands-on financial control with the strategic, board-level thinking that turns numbers into action. She’s known for being able to span “hands dirty” finance (cash, forecasting, controls) and higher-level decision support (should we do this, is it viable, what needs to change to make it work).

Sophie started her career in large organisations (Vodafone and then Sainsbury’s), where she built deep experience in commercial finance and business partnering - working closely with senior leaders across e-commerce, marketing and trading to influence decisions and improve performance. She later held senior roles across strategy finance, online finance and group FP&A, including exposure to M&A and investor-facing work.

More recently, Sophie moved into SME and scale-up finance leadership. She spent four years as Finance Director at Redemption Roasters, helping the founders scale the business (from around £5m revenue when she joined to c.£11-12m), navigate cash and profitability challenges, and raise £2.7m from a mix of angels and institutional investors. She now runs her own fractional practice (Raise the Bar Financial Management) and supports businesses including TOTM as fractional CFO.

Focus of 1-2-1 Session

Sophie is best suited to founders and CEOs of consumer and retail-facing businesses (including food and drink, e-commerce and omnichannel), typically at early trading to growth stage, who need sharper visibility on cash, profitability and the commercial choices in front of them. She’s especially useful when the business is growing quickly, running tight on cash, considering a big decision (hire, expansion, channel shift), or preparing for fundraising.

A 1:1 with Sophie is a practical working session and typically focuses on:

  • Cash and runway clarity - getting clear on what is really driving cash, what is coming next, and what needs attention first.
  • Commercial decision support - modelling key choices (pricing, channel, expansion, headcount) and sense-checking whether they make commercial sense.
  • Forecasting and planning - building or improving a forecast so it’s usable, not theoretical - including scenarios when evidence is limited.
  • Fundraising finance readiness - what to expect in diligence, how to manage a cap table process, and getting your financial story into a shape that investors can follow.
  • Distribution and retail economics - pressure-testing the unit economics of different routes to market (DTC vs retail/off-trade vs partnerships), and what it does to margin and cash.

Sophie works best with founders who value finance as a strategic input (not just reporting), and she can support either through one-off sessions, project work (e.g., forecast rebuild), or ongoing fractional finance leadership depending on the stage and need.
