James Jenkinson

Bio

James Jenkinson is a commercially focused advisor, investor and former Managing Director with 30+ years’ experience across manufacturing, engineering and international business. He brings deep practical knowledge of how industrial and technology-led businesses win customers, build credible routes to market, and scale revenue in complex sectors.

James started his career as a soldier - experience that still shows up in how he works today: strong focus on team, clarity of objectives, and straightforward communication. Over the last 25 years he has held board-level roles in SMEs as Sales Director and MD, typically in businesses around £5m-£10m turnover, including a Venture Capital-backed Management Buy-Out.

His industry background spans advanced plastics engineering, rubber and tyre manufacturing, manufacturing equipment and broader engineering, selling into automotive, aerospace, defence, marine and rail/transportation markets - often linked to themes like lightweighting, energy and advanced technologies. He has extensive experience of international scale-up, including assembly/manufacturing operations in Asia and Europe, Joint Ventures and strategic partnerships, as well as appointment and performance management of international sales
teams, agents and distributors.

Since stepping away from his last full-time MD role, James has built a consultancy focused on two areas: technology commercialisation (getting the commercial side right, not just the tech) and growth funding (from grants through to equity). He is an active angel investor with a portfolio across medtech, cleantech, fintech, healthcare and SaaS, typically backing pre-seed, seed and up to Series A businesses.

Focus of 1-2-1 Session

James is best suited to early-stage founders (pre-seed to Series A) who are building a product with a clear commercial application and want to strengthen the route to market and funding plan. He’s particularly relevant for B2B and industrially-rooted innovation - engineering, manufacturing, deep tech, medtech and adjacent sectors - but can also help tech startups where the core challenge is commercialisation and traction.

A 1:1 with James is a practical working session and typically focuses on:

● Commercialisation and route to market - identifying the best initial markets, shaping a focused go-to-market plan, and avoiding “spray and pray” business development.

● Traction and customer evidence - how to demonstrate market pull (LOIs, early customer interest, pilots) in a way that gives investors and partners confidence,
especially pre-revenue.

● Investor readiness for early rounds - sense-checking whether your story and traction match the expectations of angels vs later-stage investors, and what to improve before raising.

● Funding strategy - exploring the right mix of grants, equity and other funding routes, with clear prioritisation and next steps.

● Team and execution realism - straight, experienced challenge on whether the plan is doable with the team you have and the resources you’re likely to secure.

James typically engages with startups on a project basis with clear scope, deliverables and a fixed cost - designed to be digestible for early-stage budgets. Where there's a strong fit, he can also support as a board advisor and may invest when the team and commercial evidence stack up.
